George Charette, 78, CEO and chief engineer of Medical Engineering Volunteers of Florida, died Nov. 6 at Peace River
George Charette, 78, led Medical Engineering Volunteers of Florida.
Regional Medical Center after battling pneumonia.
The electrical engineer was well known in the community for helping improve the quality of life for hundreds of disabled residents, through providing wheelchairs, wheelchair ramps and inventions to help the paralyzed with tasks such as turning pages of books or transferring safely from the wheelchair to shower.
“Even in death, he still helps people,” said his son, John Charette. “He donated his body to the Anatomical Board of Florida to train doctors in kidney transplant therapy.”
Last year, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging recognized Charette’s generosity at the MetLife Foundation Older Volunteers Enrich America Awards, honoring “the exemplary contributions of older volunteers.” Charette was one of 25 volunteers nationwide chosen for the award, given in Washington, D.C.
