King’s daughter, April, who has cerebral palsy and is mentally impaired, needed such a specialized van to be transported to doctors’ appointments.

“I appreciate it so much, and April claps when I put her on the lift. My wife, Cheryl Lynn, died tragically a year ago of a massive heart attack when she was giving April her medicine, and it had become extremely difficult for me to lift April by myself into the car and take her to the doctor. The Lord was with me when I received this van,” King said.
Barbara Bayes, executive director of Good News Mountaineer Garage, said Lewie and Jolynn Shine of Morgantown donated the van, and the staff had been hoping to find a family who needed a wheelchair lift and qualified for the program.
“We are so thrilled we could provide George and April with this van,” Bayes said. “It is so important that people realize that their used vehicles of all types can be donated to someone in need and it can make such a huge difference in their lives.”
Bayes said individuals and companies who donate vehicles are also eligible for a tax deduction on their federal income taxes, and if it is available, a direct state tax credit.
In addition, individuals who purchase a new car or light truck before Jan. 1 can deduct state and local sales and excise taxes without itemizing due to provisions in the Stimulus Bill.
April, who recently celebrated her 28th birthday, loves riding in the van, listening to music on its stereo system and watching cartoons on the VCR. George and his oldest daughter, Christina Lynn, care for April, and she has a physical therapist who visits their apartment twice a week.
George said proudly that he gave April her name of April Sunshine when she was born and that his wife named Christina Lynn.

George King of Cross Lanes and his daughter, April, who is mentally impaired and has cerebral palsy, received an early Christmas present this year a 1995 Chevy van with a wheelchair lift from the Good News Mountaineer Garage, the program which repairs used vehicles and gives them to families in need.
